Research

The research was divided into two aspects:

  • who is our target audience?

  • what will drive the users to recycle and use the app?

We combined research done by Lehavim (Yizik Zadik) for Tmir and we made our own user research.

Target audience research insight

People over 55 have an Over-representation with the hights percentage of recycling involvement.

People outside Gush Dan (central Israel) are recycling more and more often.

People with higher income tend to recycle more.

The recycling percentage is the same between men and women.

Over-representation for households with two children or less.

Recycling drive research insight

Community benefits and personal benefits were an equal drive for recycling.

preferred benefits include a discount or free entry to concert shows, theaters, museums, natural parks, etc.

Community benefits include building or renovating public parks, playgrounds, and outdoor sports facilities, etc.

Meet the tormented Efrat

Efrat 2.jpg

Efrat is 37 years old, married, has three children, and works in HR for a hi-tech company.

Efrat is tormented because she knows the importance of recycling, she is very environment-conscious, and she wants a cleaner involvement for her children, but she doesn't have time to recycle and doesn't know which trash type belongs to which color trash bin.

Efrat's dilemma

Efrat 2.jpg

it goes to the landfill anyway

I have no time

what goes where?

where the cans go?

milk carton go's in the blue bin?

the bin is always full

most people don't care

Our solution

After an impressive brainstorming with the team and an understanding of the problem, we decided on a solution,

The main feature of the app is to help the recycler from the starting point of selecting the right bin to recycle all the way to the documentation of the recycling.

Simple elegant with easy access to key features

Key features for the APP

  • Simple and easy to use.

  • Quick access to camera, benefits, score, and knowledge center.

  • Elegant design.

  • Building public trust in the recycling process.

Recycling encouragement

To encourage recycling we develop personal and community recycling goals.

By collecting coins the user can decide to invest the coins for personal use or for community use.

The tormented's tale

Profile page
On the profile page, we created easy access for the user to find all the benefits to be earned, a progress bar on active personal and community goals, the total coins collected, and basic recycling information.

Trash identifier
the dilemma of which trash goes to which bin has been resolved with an AI scanner, the scanner can scan the barcode or an image and it will give us a result of the type of trash we scanned to which bin to throw it in and some information on the item itself.

Map
In most cities in Israel, the recycle bins are located in public designated areas, in order to find the nearest one to you, we created a map page that includes all the trash bins and trash bins colors within your area, and also an easy navigating system to find the relevant bin for you.

After selecting a relevant bin a details page with bins information is opened showing the type of bins in that location if the bin is full, and an option to report a full bin, the day of trash collection and other relevant information.

Document the recycling process
in order to claim your coins Tmir wanted the user to document the recycling process to insure no foul play is at hand.
we created a one-button page for the documenting process, a bit in AI can identify the trash being recycled, the number of trash Items, or an estimate on bag size (in order not to document every single item), to encourage young kids to participate we added an option to add Dudy (recycle mascot) in the image.

Earning coins
After the documentation had been completed the AI will calculate the number of coins earned and we took the dead time to add knowledge value and build more public trust in the recycling process.
